Finally… A Farmhouse Dining Table

Finally… A Farmhouse Dining Table

So we moved into our house at the very end of July and have been thanking our lucky stars and our awesome Creator for such beautiful summer weather the past two months. Its allowed us to eat the majority of our meals outside at our deck table or indoors on our couch. Yes, like college students… we have to do something to keep us feeling young!

Fast forward to now where things are starting to cool off as Fall peeks its head into the season here and there, and it’s no longer ideal to dine outside. Thankfully, my husband is a TOTAL BABE and handcrafted our new farmhouse table, so we’ve been able to escape the cold and enjoy this gorgeous piece for the past few weeks. 🙂

I’ll tell you now we didn’t have any formal plans to follow — Justin did all the math, measurements, cuts, etc. and then we adjusted as we went to make this the best table we could. See, total babe, right?!

Okay, so the project began back in August with me showing him a full lineup of potential dining table styles we could go with, followed by some more research, planning, and a few trips to Home Depot and Lowes. I was so excited to get started that we even mapped out where the table would go with painters tape in our dining room. Unfortunately, the painters tape was the only thing that would be in that spot for quite some time…

After what felt like weeks, we started to chip away at the project in the evenings after work and on the weekends we had free. Little by little, the wood started to look like a frame, then a table, and then a stained and painted table! Up next was polyurethaning… that took forever! Or maybe it was just me being impatient. But, I can happily say it was so worth it as I LOVE our table. It’s so smooth, beautiful, and full of character — it’s not perfect, but that’s my favorite thing about it. That, and whenever I look at it I envision all of the meals we’ll enjoy and the memories we’ll make with our family and friends.

Because my contributions were mainly casting vision, encouraging J along the way, and nudging him to “Please just work a little longer!” I tried to find other ways to bring our dining room to life. Enter this gorgeous centerpiece! I bought the crate from Michaels and the mason jars are from my grandma’s farmhouse in upstate New York. Next, I went to Hobby Lobby (one of my favorite places ever) and picked out a pretty, fall themed bouquet of peonies as well as some individual berry sprigs. After clipping, trimming, bending, and rearranging, I had a classy, colorful centerpiece! And, I can easily swap out the flowers for different ones depending on the season. Win-Win.

Just like the recipes on Basil Belle, you can create things in your home without a killer setup, kitchen, or workshop. It does, however, require patience, creativity, and it definitely helps to have someone handy or crafty in your midst.
