Rustic Bed Frame & Head Board

Rustic Bed Frame & Head Board

Owning a home has been a lot of fun so far. Sure, it’s posed its challenges such as how does one fit a King bed up the stairs, do we buy a frame and head board or make our own? You probably know us enough by now to guess we went with the second option:  build our own. First things first, we needed a mattress. So, we ordered a memory foam mattress from Amazon as they come rolled up and fairly compact considering. Well, it showed up in July and weighed about 70 pounds! Yep. My pro of a husband hauled that thing up our stairs like a champ, but we couldn’t unbox it until our frame was complete or there’d be no room to move not to mention minimal chance of maneuvering the giant thing anywhere else upstairs.

Next was figuring out what we wanted our bed frame to look like. We hit the internet and looked at a lot of pictures, gathered ideas, sketched out our bed frame, and then made some trips to the hardware store… We were finally ready to put this baby together! Due to the size, much of it had to be assembled in the garage and then disassembled to get it up the stairs, and then you guessed it, reassembled in our bedroom. Whew, I’m tired just thinking about it. We ended up making it a platform style frame with plywood instead of wood slats so the mattress could lay directly on the frame rather than on a box spring.

Everything came together beautifully! And, because we had a queen size bed before, we needed new sheets, comforter, etc. Justin graciously let me (aka finally gave in) pick out something more feminine that our previous bedspreads. Truth be told, I showed him this super frilly, borderline gaudy comforter first so he wouldn’t wrinkle his nose at the option I really wanted. 😀 No, this is not manipulation, this is knowing one’s husband and showing him the lesser of two evils (or at least evils to him). You can pick up the comforter at Wayfair… a place where I spend way too much money.

Our frame was complete and we had a place to rest our heads at night. And thank goodness because we needed the sleep considering we had other projects to attend to, like the dining table! We’re finally getting around to making a headboard — It’s currently sitting in our garage ready for polyurethane, but it’ll be upstairs in no time! Stay tuned for more pictures. 🙂

Update:  the head board is up and I LOVE it! Check out the pictures below.

Overall, while these home projects aren’t necessarily cheaper than buying something from the store, it’s a lot more satisfying.
